La Troisieme Republique a mystifie Beethoven. Elle en a fait un personnage de fiction, et l'a integre au canon francais, en le dotant de toutes les valeurs morales et ideologiques qui fondent alors la construction de l'identite nationale. Ce mythe se deploie dans un vaste corpus, constitue de critique musicale, de biographies, de romans, de pieces de theatre, d'edition de vulgarisation et d'edition pedagogique, qui concourent a faire de Beethoven un personnage, voire un type romanesque. Il devient en effet un materiau litteraire qui va former une veritable litterature beethovenienne, ainsi qu'une poetique, marquees par les emprunts multiples a la litterature epique et hagiographique, mais aussi a la litterature populaire.
