Tuotilo – Archaologie eines fruhmittelalterlichen Kunstlers
edited by David Ganz
German text.
English summary: The monk Tuotilo (c. 850-913) was one of the leading figures of the cultural flowering of the monastery of St. Gall in the 9th and 10th century. He was already commemorated and celebrated in the Middle Ages as the exemplary artist of St. Gall. In August of 2015, the precinct of St. Gall hosted a Swiss National Science Foundation-sponsored conference to discuss the exceptional cultural flowering in the Early Middle Ages, organized by the St. Gall Library Foundation and the Chair of Medieval Art History at the University of Zurich. The conference offered an interdisciplinary exchange concerning new insights about Tuotilo’s life, his environment, his work as a goldsmith, ivory cutter, painter, poet, and composer as well as various aspects of the reception of Tuotilo and his work in later centuries. This volume offer the majority of the conference papers together as part of the series “Monasterium Sancti Galli.”
