Je m’enfouis dsesprment dans mon livre d’esthtique , confie Adorno Herbert Marcuse en janvier 1969. La disparition du philosophe, au mois d’aot de la mme anne, interrompt brutalement l’achvement de Thorie esthtique. L’ouvrage, dit en 1970 par les ditions Suhrkamp, ne comporte aucun chapitre, et les fragments runis par l’auteur lui-mme sous le titre Paralipomena, ainsi qu’une premire version de l’introduction, figurent tels quels en fin de volume. Le texte n’tait pas destin tre publi en l’tat. Toutefois Adorno n’en et certainement pas modifi fondamentalement la disposition. Le mode aphoristique traduit en effet la pense dialectique du philosophe confronte aux uvres marquantes du XXe sicle, celles de Kafka, de Proust, de Joyce, de Klee, de Picasso, de Schnberg, et de Beckett auquel il ddie son ouvrage. Ces crivains, peintres et compositeurs ont su, pour Adorno, crer les formes les plus radicales de l’avant-garde. La modernit qu’elles expriment enregistre toute l’ambigut de l’art, la fois autonome et, malgr tout, fait social, dernier lieu de rsistance au monde administr .
