Die Stadt als Forschungsprojekt verschiedener Disziplinen ist seit langem etabliert. Die vergleichende Stadteforschung mit multidisziplinarem Ansatz dagegen ist im Institut fur vergleichende Stadtegeschichte (IStG) in Munster als einer der wenigen Forschungseinrichtungen institutionalisiert. Mit seiner Atlasarbeit ist das IStG seit seiner Grundung 1970 Teil des von der Commission Internationale pour l”Histoire des Villes (CIHV) 1965 ins Leben gerufenen Europaischen Stadteatlas – einem Grossprojekt, dessen konkrete Arbeit in Teilprojekten auf nationaler oder regionaler Ebene geleistet wird. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes sind als eine Bilanz der bisherigen Atlasarbeit zu verstehen.
