Die Skaldendichtung – in Norwegen wahrend der fruhen Wikingerzeit, im 9. Jahrhundert, zuerst bezeugt, dann seit dem 10. Jahrhundert fast ausschliesslich von Islandern gepflegt – ist die alteste volkssprachige Kunstlyrik des mittelalterlichen Europas, alter und auch langlebiger als die provenzalische Trobadordichtung, mit der sie manche Eigenarten teilt. Ebenso wie diese stand sie – zumal in einer Zeit, die ihren Kunstgeschmack am Begriff der “Erlebnisdichtung” orientierte, – im Verruf, blosse Formkunst, raffinierte Artistik und spitzfindiges Verstandesspiel zu sein. Erst die Uberwindung der asthetischen Vorstellungen des 19. Jahrhunderts machte den Weg frei fur eine gerechtere Beurteilung. Die Wiederentdeckung anaturalistischen “Kunstwollens” seit dem Expressionismus, die Beschaftigung mit dem Manierismus, die Vorliebe fur das Artifizielle in der modernen Lyrik: – alles das sollte geeignet sein, der Skaldendichtung uber den Kreis der Fachleute hinaus ein aktuelles Interesse zu sichern.
