Seit Umberto Ecos Roman ‘Der Name der Rose’ ist bekannt, dass das Lachen im Mittelalter eine heikle, ja eine ‘brandgefahrliche’ Sache sein kann. Tatsachlich galt heftiges, massloses oder – vor allem den Frauen zugeschriebenes – torichtes Lachen in den monastischen Kreisen des Fruh- und Hochmittelalters als verwerflich und wurde oft mit einem hollischen Gelachter gleichgeSetzt. Mit der Wiederentdeckung verschiedener Schriften des griechischen Philosophen Aristoteles Setzte sich im 13. Jh. eine positivere Beurteilung des Lachens durch,bevor im Spatmittelalter das Weinen ungleich hoher bewertet und das Lachen erneut verurteilt wurde.
