English summary: The empire of the Persian Sasanids (224-651 AD) extended over areas of present-day Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Caucasus regions were also under its political influence. Many elements of Sasanid art and culture can be found in neighbouring countries like Byzantium and the Christian Caucasus. After the fall of the Sasanids they lived on in the Islamic territories that emerged from their former territory. In order to examine the continued role of the Sasanid Persians and their culture, an international conference was held in September 2017 at the Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz. The papers presented by scholars from various disciplines are published in this volume.
