English summary: This richly illustrated volume provides an overview of 20 years of archaeological excavations in Sagalassos, Turkey. It centers around the impact three historical figures had on the history of Sagalassos and its environment: Alexander the Great, Augustus and Hadrian. Dutch text. Dutch description: Dit rijk geillustreerde boek biedt een overzicht van 20 jaar archaeologische opgravingen in Sagalassos. Het volume is geconcentreerd rondom de impact van drie persoonlijkheden op de geschiedenis van Sagalassos en zijn grondgebied, die de stad uiteindelijk letterlijk en figuurlijk lieten uitgroeien tot de eerste stad van Pisidie, vriend en bondgenoot van de Romeinen. Eerst is er Alexander de Grote die, met zijn opvolgers, een enorme impuls gaf aan het eerste grote acculturatieproces waaraan Sagalassos onderworpen werd, namelijk de confrontatie met de Griekse cultuur. Vervolgens is er Augustus, van wie de visie en uitstraling het Rijk zowel stabiliteit als een ongekende bloei bezorgde en die de leidende persoonlijkheid was achter wat men thans als de ‘Romeinse culturele revolutie’ bestempelt. Tenslotte is er nog de figuur van keizer Hadrianus die beide acculturatieprocessen voltooide en door middel van de keizercultus, geconcentreerd rondom een heiligdom in Sagalassos, er in slaagde de regio een gevoel van verbondenheid en etnische identiteit te geven.
