Romische Medaillons sind ein Medium der kaiserlichen Selbstdarstellung und damit eine wichtige historische Quellengattung. Dies gilt in besonderer Weise fur Antoninus Pius, der in der antiken literarischen Uberlieferung als traditionsbewusster Friedenskaiser charakterisiert wird. Die 520 hier katalogisierten und besprochenen Medaillons aus dessen Herrschaftszeit erganzen dieses Bild um weitere zentrale Facetten. So nehmen beispielsweise mehr Darstellungen als bei jedem anderen Kaiser Bezug auf griechische Mythen und Gottheiten, die nicht zum traditionellen romischen Kanon gehoren. Zudem konnen viele Medaillons mit militarischen Ereignissen in Zusammenhang gebracht werden und helfen zuweilen auch bei deren Datierung. In einzelnen Fallen scheinen Medaillons sogar personliche Aspekte des Kaisers widerzuspiegeln. Auf den 108 Tafeln sind die meisten Medaillons abgebildet. Konkordanzen und Indices ermoglichen zudem eine schnelle Erschliessung.
