Christliche Feste und Feiertage prägen das gesellschaftliche Leben in Deutschland und strukturieren unsere Zeit, selbst in einer zunehmend säkularisierten Gesellschaft. Gleichzeitig bewirkt die religiöse und kulturelle Pluralisierung, dass jüdische und muslimische Feiertage zunehmend an Alltagsbedeutung gewinnen. Sie werden auch im Schulleben zunehmend wahrgenommen und im besten Fall thematisiert und integriert. Dies ist ein wichtiger Aspekt von Inklusion, der allerdings meist vergessen wird.
Das vorliegende Handbuch will einen Beitrag dazu leisten, dass Formen der Exklusion von religiösen Rechten und Bedürfnissen im Raum der Schule entgegengetreten werden kann. Schulleitungen wie Lehrerinnen und Lehrer sollen mithilfe eines fundierten Basiswissens und Anregungen für die Praxis befähigt werden, in kompetenter Weise mit religiösen Fast-, Fest- und Feiertagen in den drei monotheistischen, abrahamischen Religionen umzugehen.
