Pour les regardeurs

After resurfacing in the nineteenth century, the word regardeur (beholder) has remained rare in French, except within the field of contemporary art. A study of its usage shows that the term tends to designate a silent and solitary act of contemplation—an expert practice removed from the dominance of verbal language, scholarly discourse, and from the constraints of the social order.
