The volume illustrates, through diverse perspectives, the complex phenomenon by which Pompeii became, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an essential reference for architectural culture.
Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Pompeii influenced the training of architects: direct experience in surveying and construction sites, academic fellowships, and study trips transformed the ancient world into a methodological foundation for innovation in design practice.
Secondly, it exerted a significant influence on various national cultures through a plurality of modes of reception: Pompeii functioned as a crossroads of European and transatlantic exchanges, generating a shared vocabulary articulated according to different traditions, schools, and sensibilities. Cultural reverberations in Scandinavia and the United States, as well as in France and Italy, also consisted in the selection and reworking of types, motifs, colors, and devices, establishing a common ground alongside diverse interpretations.
