In der Vormoderne wurden, um Krankheiten zu heilen, die Seelen-, die Temperamenten-, die Elementen- und die Lebensalterlehre genutzt, die in der Humoralpathologie zusammenliefen. Auch Kunstwerke hatten von Anbeginn an unter anderem eine therapeutische Funktion, die sie legitimierte – denn als autonom konnten Literatur und Bildende Kunst noch kaum gelten. Diese Funktion wiederum wurde massgeblich von ihrer didaktischen Wirkung her bestimmt: Kunstwerke sollten an einem humanen Menschenbild arbeiten. Gerade namhafte Kunstwerke haben diesen Zweck selbst mit dargestellt und dabei den engen Zusammenhang von melancholischem Krankheitsbild und asthetischem Gemutsausgleich thematisiert. Anhand der in diesem Buch behandelten Werke wird gezeigt, dass diese eine psychophysische Therapiefunktion ausgeubt haben und dass man sie insofern als Teil der zeitgenossischen Praxis des Heilens verstehen kann.
