English summary: In 1900 the German orientalist and philologist Oskar Mann (1867-1917) undertook two expeditions to the Middle East with the intention of systematically recording and studying the Persian and Kurdish languages including their varieties and dialects. He recorded his experiences and impressions in the form of letters to make sure they would be securely preserved when being regularly shipped to Berlin. Mojtaba Kolivand has now gathered the almost completely surviving collection of letters to Mann’s family in Berlin, along with his bi-annual reports to the Berlin Academy of Sciences and Humanities, letters to fellow orientalists and personalities such as Friedrich Carl Andreas, Eduard Sachau and the German Kaiser. Mann’s descriptions are further illustrated with the help of a selection of one hundred of his travel photographs, providing an impression of the lands and peoples of the Middle East at around 1900. The most essential stages of the expeditions are reproduced in two-color maps. An introduction provides complementary information on the life of Oskar Mann, the significance of his work and the history of research on Kurdish-Persian languages. The work includes numerous footnotes and a glossary of foreign terms.
