Since the 18th century, the aesthetics of antiquity have mainly been assessed from the perspective of the Platonic doctrine of beauty. Other voices, such as the sophists’, have been less highly regarded. However, in the age of the uomo universal, artists and humanists preferred the sophistic view on art to that of Platonic aesthetics. In her study, Nadia J. Koch emphasizes the sophistic view of the creators of art. The principal concepts of ancient technai are for the first time systematically presented and the constitutional genres of art writing such as treatises on workshops, catalogues of artists and ekphraris are discussed in the context of their historical development. Jahrhundert hat man die antike Asthetik vornehmlich aus der Sicht der Platonischen Schonheitslehre betrachtet, die Bilder und Statuen einer strengen Kritik unterziehen und einer Generalabrechnung mit den mimetischen Verfahren als solchen gleichkommen. Andere Stimmen, etwa die Sophisten, hat die Forschung bisher weniger berucksichtigt. Doch im Zeitalter des uomo universale lag den Kunstlern und Humanisten der sophistische Blick auf die Kunst naher als die Platonische Asthetik. Auf der Suche nach universellen Formeln zur Nachschopfung antiker Werke erkannten sie bald den systematischen Gehalt der ‘Kunstbucher’ des Plinius, deren erste Erschliessung fur die malerische Praxis Leon Battista Alberti gelang, der die pictura gar zur Leitkunst der Wissenschaft erhob. Im Barock setzte Franciscus Junius diesen Weg mit seiner Schrift “De pictura veterum” fort, indem er Albertis System um das Konzept des Erhabenen bereicherte. Damit war eine Brucke von der Kunsttheorie zur Altertumswissenschaft geschlagen, die bis in das 18. Jahrhundert hinein Bestand haben sollte. Nadia J. Koch stellt in ihrer Studie die sophistische Sicht der Kunstproduzenten in den Vordergrund: Erstmals werden die Grundkonzepte der antiken Technai systematisch dargestellt und die richtungsweisenden Gattungen der Kunstschriftstellerei wie Werkstattabhandlung, Kunstlerkatalog und Ekphrasis in ihrem historischen Wandel diskutiert. Damit leistet Koch einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Erforschung der fruhneuzeitlichen Kunsttheorie.
