Innozenz III., dessen Wahl sich am 8.1.1998 zum 800. Mal jahrte, hat die Geschichte Europas auf vielen Gebieten und in fast allen Staaten entscheidend beeinflusst, auch wenn die Entwicklung keineswegs immer so verlief, wie er selbst es geplant hatte. Dabei war der Papst als Politiker, Theologe, Seelsorger, Verwaltungsfachmann und Kunstmazen tatig; die Nachwirkungen seiner Personlichkeit reichten bis ins 19. Jahrhundert.
