Humphry Repton e considerato uno degli artefici di quello straordinario prodotto culturale che va sotto il nome di “giardino all’inglese”. Questa e la prima traduzione italiana delle Observations on Landscape Gardening, un’opera fondamentale per il tema in questione, dove Repton da prova di ampia esperienza pratica e, insieme, di preparazione teorica (il suo retroterra culturale spazia dalla letteratura alla pittura, fino alle discipline scientifiche). Repton raccoglieva i suoi progetti e le sue visioni su come intervenire su un sito nei Red Books, i “Taccuini rossi” che lo resero famoso perche in essi i clienti potevano vedere il progetto e la differenza tra il prima e dopo dell’ambiente da ridisegnare. Se si potesse fare un raffronto letterario, per gusto, approccio e stile sarebbe con Jane Austen, che nell’equilibrio e nell’eleganza individua il carattere piu intimo dell’Inghilterra. Austen peraltro cita espressamente Repton nel suo Mansfield Park (1814). Estetica e buon gusto sono ingredienti essenziali per l’equilibrio nel rapporto tra natura e arte, nella concezione e realizzazione dei parchi, dei giardini, dei palazzi stessi e al centro delle grandi tenute signorili.
