Celui qui lit dans une langue etrangere se fait une force de sa faiblesse. Il lit avec plus d’attention que dans sa langue maternelle. L’incompetence est pour lui un stimulant autant qu’un handicap. On lit mieux dans une langue qu’on sait mal. Comme il l’a fait de ses lectures d’enfance dans Seuls les enfants savent lire, Michel Zink se souvient ici de quelques-uns des livres lus au cours de sa vie en allemand, anglais ou italien, non qu’il possede parfaitement ces langues, mais au contraire parce que la paresse lui a trop souvent fait preferer le plaisir de la lecture a l’effort d’un apprentissage methodique.
