God is dood, zegt Nietzsche. Alleen nog een god kan ons redden, zegt Heidegger. Vattimo poogt beide citaten te rijmen in een religieus nihilisme dat hij ontwikkelt vanuit zijn ‘zwakke denken’. Dat nihilisme is niet langer de actualiteit waaraan de mens lijdt (Nietzsche) of die opent op een nieuw zijn(sdenken) (Heidegger), maar is zelf een ‘goede boodschap’, in zowel filosofische, ethische als theologische zin. Door echter het heil in het nihilisme, in de laatmoderne metafysica te zoeken, situeert Vattimo de caritas veeleer in de markt dan in het gebed. Deze provocatieve stelling ligt aan de basis van het populaire Ik geloof dat ik geloof. Eerst worden Nietzsche en Heidegger herlezen vanuit het zwakke denken, daarna worden de pietas en de caritas uitgewerkt. Ten slotte, beantwoordt de nihilistische caritas van Vattimo de actuele vragen van de eenentwingste-eeuwse ‘gelovige’?
