Rousseau ist zugleich ein popularer, aber auch unzuganglicher Denker. Dies ist dem Umstand geschuldet, dass die Bedeutung seiner Philosophie in eigentumlicher Weise mit ihrer Systematik kontrastiert. Bisherige Interpretationen haben daher entweder ganz auf den Systemanspruch verzichtet oder Rousseaus Philosophie im Sinne eines anderen Denkers gleichsam von auaen zu systematisieren versucht. Im Gegensatz zu fruheren Bemuhungen versucht diese Rekonstruktion, Rousseaus Philosophie als systematische aus sich selbst heraus zu klaren. Im Zentrum steht dabei der Gedanke des Dreischritts von Natur, Kunst und Freiheit, der sowohl die thematische Ordnung des rousseauschen Oeuvres insgesamt bildet als auch die innere Logik wiedergibt, die dieses durchherrscht. Sie selbst jedoch stellt weder eine Vernunft- noch Seinsnotwendigkeit dar, sondern ist Ausdruck des Wirkens der Kontingenz in der Geschichte, die ihrerseits ein Produkt menschlicher Freiheit ist. Rousseaus Philosophie offnet sich damit systematisch zur Freiheitsphilosophie Kants.
