Passion, obsession, defiance, and the highest creativity: for more than 40 years the sculptor Michelangelo worked to realize the tomb of Pope Julius II and its accompanying statues, without which it could not have been completed. This tomb was the project in which Michelangelo invested the most attention and the one in which he came closest to a sense of completeness. The restoration of the tomb offers the change for a new art-historical consideration as well as a careful photo-campaign, which the singular photos make possible. The extensive presentation of the planning history, the detailed analysis of the layout and architecture of the tomb and its statues as well as documentation about the restoration efforts make this book an invaluable tool for further research. Michelangelos drafts and numerous reconstruction sketches complete the graphic component of this book which also includes the exquisite photographs of the tomb. German text.
