Dieses Grabmal ist das Projekt in Michelangelos Leben, in das er die grosste Sorgfalt gesteckt hat und das einer Vorstellung von Vollkommenheit am nachsten kommt. Die Restaurierung des Grabmals bot die Chance einer neuen kunstwissenschaftlichen Betrachtung sowie einer gross angelegten Fotokampagne, die einmalige Aufnahmen ermoglichte. Die umfassende Darstellung der Planungsgeschichte, die detaillierte Analyse der Ausstattung und Architektur des Grabmals und seiner Statuen wie auch die Dokumentation der Restaurierungsergebnisse machen das Buch zu einem Standardwerk und unschatzbaren Werkzeug fur weitere Forschungen.
