Cette medecine, fondee essentiellement sur des symptomes et ne requerant que peu de moyens materiels ou techniques, est pratiquee par les moines, au benefice de leur communaute comme des populations avoisinantes. A partir d'une etude de cas, celui de l'abbaye de Saint-Jacques de Liege, ce livre entend montrer la survie de la medecine monastique au bas Moyen Age, conjointement a la medecine universitaire. Une recherche de textes paralleles circonscrit ce savoir dans l'espace et le temps, tout en soulignant ses liens avec la tradition medicale savante.
