Since the Middle Ages, the heroic epics of the Chanson de Geste have been regarded as a native, national French tradition, as Matiere de France. However, recent observations and findings give reason to reconsider the long-standing question to what extent the Germanic heroic epic really influenced the world of French legends and literature, and in how far the literature and culture of the Franks have left their mark on the country named after them – as a Matiere des Francs. The approach combines a critical research report with linguistic and literary historical overviews and also contains single case studies regarding certain subjects and motifs such as mythological figures like dwarf Alberich, smith Wieland and warrior Walther of Aquitaine as well as their French counterparts Auberon, Galand and Gualter de l’Hum. Doch neue Beobachtungen und Erkenntnisse geben Anlass, noch einmal die alte Forschungsfrage aufzugreifen, inwieweit die germanische Heldenepik fur die Sagenwelt der jungeren franzosischen Dichtungen Pate stand und welche Spuren Literatur und Kultur der Franken – gleichsam als Matiere des Francs – in dem nach ihnen benannten Land hinterliessen. Behandelt wird dieses Thema in einem kritischen Forschungsbericht, in geschichtlichen, sprach- und literaturhistorischen Uberblicken sowie in stoff- und motivgeschichtlichen Einzelstudien, die Sagengestalten wie dem Zwerg Alberich, dem Schmied Wieland und dem Recken Walther von Aquitanien sowie ihren franzosischen Pendants Auberon, Galand und Gualter de l’Hum gewidmet sind.
