Le retour de Platon, dans la seconde moitie du XVe siecle, sous-tend le projet philosophique de la Renaissance tout entiere: fonder l’humanisme sur l’aptitude de l’homme a relier, rassembler, reunir tous les humains sans exclusive. L’homme recapitule en lui toutes les especes minerales, vegetales, animales, mais cette fonction de microcosme n’est que l’image d’une fonction autrement importante, puisqu’elle incombe a sa liberte et non a sa seule nature, celle d’unir entre eux tous les semblables. Tel serait le role d’une religion au sens propre du mot, capable de relier, donc d’accorder toutes les opinions, toutes les confessions, tous les dogmes. Cette activite lieuse ne saurait etre reconnue qu’a une pia philosophia, susceptible de distribuer tous les degres de la doxa et de comprendre toutes les formes d’orthodoxies, en les ordonnant a l’Unique, seul inconditionne. C’est l’affaire, selon Marsile Ficin, du platonisme, matrice de toutes les grandes theologies, dont il assume la diversite tout en revelant la secrete unite.
