Marco Coltellini (1724-1777) occupies a prominent position in the history of 18th-century music and culture. After working as a publisher and printer in Livorno, he devoted himself to poetry for music in Vienna, where he contributed to ‘reforming’ melodrama, and in St. Petersburg. During his eventful international career, he collaborated with eminent opera composers, including Gianfrancesco de Majo, Tommaso Traetta, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Giuseppe Scarlatti, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Salieri, and Giovanni Paisiello. The ten essays collected in this volume help to clarify his biography, retrace his network of professional and artistic relations, and offer new interpretations of some of his most significant librettos.
