Jean-Francois Lyotard (1924-1998) occupe une place a part dans l’univers de la pensee “continentale”. Philosophe artiste, venu de la phenomenologie et du marxisme, il a su apprendre des peintres, des ecrivains, des musiciens et… des scientifiques. Politique desabuse, ancien militant de Socialisme ou Barbarie (groupe de l’ultra-gauche anti-stalinienne anime par C. Lefort et C. Castoriadis), acteur de l’evenement-mai 68, il fini par ne plus croire a la valeur subversive de la negativite et par reconnaitre un “proche” en Malraux. Auteur de plus de trente livres – parmi lesquels Discours, figure, L’inhumain, La condition postmoderne et Le differend – traduits dans une dizaine de langues, inventeur d’une notion aux fortunes diverses, le postmoderne, Jean-Francois Lyotard est pour beaucoup (surtout hors de France) l’incarnation contemporaine de ce qu’on appelait autrefois un sophiste. Reexposant ses grands themes – la verite, le langage, le temps et la sensation -, ce livre voudrait plaider pour celui qui a rappele a notre epoque d’apres Auschwitz l’importance du jugement et montrer que la tension intellectuelle qui anime cet hybride, mi-sophiste mi-philosophe, n’est pas signe de duplicite mais de la difficulte de penser droit entre enthousiasme et melancolie.
