Als grossartiges Zeugnis der Editionstatigkeit baltischer Historiker und Archivare ist das “Liv-, Est- und Kurlandische Urkundenbuch” die bedeutendste Quellenedition zur Geschichte des spatmittelalterlichen Livland, des Gebietes der heutigen Staaten Estland und Lettland, und dient als unverzichtbares Instrument zur Erforschung der baltischen Geschichte. Nachdem bis 1914 in rascher Folge 15 Bande erschienen waren, stockte das Vorhaben aufgrund politischer und wissenschaftsorganisatorischer Wechselfalle, und es blieb eine von 1472 bis 1494 reichende Lucke. Sie zu schliessen ist seit einiger Zeit Projekt der Baltischen Historischen Kommission, das nun mit einem umfangreichen, grossformatigen und inhaltsreichen Band sein erstes Ergebnis hervorbringt.
