Until it was destroyed in 1631 Magdeburg had been an important city in the Empire. Within the framework of cathedral, churches, monasteries and schools, a vibrant intellectual life had developed that produced such fundamental works as Mechthild’s “Flieaendes Licht der Gottheit” (flowing light of the deity), the “Magdeburger Zenturien” or Otto von Guericke’s “Experimenta Nova de Vacuo”.
