Quels nouveaux regards porte-t-on aujourd’hui, en France et a l’etranger, sur la question des rapports entre le texte et l’image ? Quelle unite, quelles differences emergent d’une approche diachronique de la page enluminee du manuscrit medieval, des illustrations des ouvrages imprimes des temps modernes, enfin des images dont se composent les livres d’artistes contemporains ? Deux equipes universitaires, reunies dans le cadre d’un seminaire organise par le CNRS, se sont penchees ensemble sur ces questions, en essayant de faire le point sur la place occupee actuellement par l’iconographie dans l’etude plus generale de l’illustration et de ses rapports a l’ecrit. Le present recueil rend compte de travaux et de methodes differents, tous voues a une meilleure connaissance de l’illustration des savoirs humains dans le domaine de l’histoire, de la religion, de la science, de l’art et de la fable. Les preoccupations de l’enlumineur rejoignent celles des genies de la creation, Rubens, Le Brun ou Manet.
