Through the lives of six eccentrics, Nerval delivers a eulogy to madness as well as a celebration of dreams and of freedom of thought. Raoul Spifame, the Abbé de Bucquoy, Restif de la Bretonne, Cazotte, Cagliostro, and Quintus Aucler come to represent disgraced brothers of the author, who at the time was cultivating an introspective style of writing.
