Le present volume, consacre a la notion de bonheur, s’ouvre par les contributions de J.-F. Balaude, sur Platon et Aristote, et d’A. Gigandet, sur Epicure, qui mettent en avant la distinction entre le bonheur et le plaisir. La question deja posee dans l’Antiquite de savoir si le bonheur est reserve au sage est reposee par Spinoza. On n’y repond qu’en procedant, comme le fait C. Ramond, a une analyse precise de ce qui distingue le bonheur de la beatitude, de la felicite et de la joie. Cette distinction est reprise sous la forme d’une opposition entre le bonheur singulier et le bonheur universel, chez Rousseau – comme le montre L. Vincenti -, et chez Kant, dont la conception du bonheur a trop longtemps souffert de malentendus que la contribution de B. Himmelmann vient heureusement lever. Que la notion de bonheur mette aussi en jeu les differentes positions ontologiques possibles au sein des philosophies post-kantiennes, cela ressort des reflexions de J.-Chr. Goddard sur l’etre comme angoisse (Schelling) ou l’etre comme bonheur (Fichte), d’E. Cattin qui oppose les conceptions de la serenite de Hegel et de Heidegger, et de F. Fischbach qui traite du rapport entre le bonheur et l’agir chez Marx. L’ouvrage s’acheve sur une importante etude du bonheur chez les utilitaristes, dans laquelle J.-P. Clero fait apparaitre que la theorie du bonheur et du plaisir est, notamment chez Bentham, solidaire d’une theorie du langage.
