La repubblica del cotone
Le evoluzioni dell'Uzbekistan sovietico tra inclusione e crisi imperiale

Il cotone ha caratterizzato lo sviluppo dell’industrializzazione e del capitalismo globale, trasformando le societa rurali, l’ambiente e i rapporti imperiali. Intorno a questa materia prima e legata la recente storia dell’Uzbekistan, la principale repubblica non slava dell’URSS: sui risultati cotonieri si basarono, nelle loro peculiarita, le relazioni tra Mosca e Tashkent a livello politico, economico, sociale e culturale in un sistema che includeva la periferia ma riproduceva, sotto altri vessilli, molte dinamiche del precedente regime coloniale. Ma a che prezzo? Alternando le ingerenze esterne a fasi di maggiore autonomia, la “repubblica del cotone” sarebbe rimasta attivamente inclusa e fortemente dipendente dal sistema sovietico fino al 1991 quando l’indipendenza, per quanto inauspicata, divenne inevitabile.
