Through the perception of actual losses, the historical and aesthetic interest in “antiquities” has increasingly developed into an action-oriented “art of preservation.” Monument preservation as a cultural technique does not reject modernization-an “art of destruction”-but would like limit its impact. This volume addresses the topic from the perspectives of monument preservation, architecture, and urban planning. Commentaries by architects, monument conservators, scientists and journalists complement the texts. The result is a multifaceted picture of the art of preservation. German description: Denkmalpflege ist in einer Kultur des Verschleiaes aktueller denn je. Entstanden aus der Wahrnehmung der Verluste, hat sich das historische und asthetische Interesse an den “Alterthumern” mehr und mehr zu einer handlungsorientierten “Kunst des Bewahrens” entwickelt. Denkmalpflege als Kulturtechnik lehnt die Modernisierung – eine “Kunst des Zerstorens” – nicht ab, mochte ihr aber Grenzen setzen.
