Rorty). Special areas of study are: social dynamics, forms of government, religious teachings, moral intentions, philosophical doctrines, exchange with Jews and the Islamic culture, consecution of the heretics, development of natural science, literature, poetry, architecture and painting. Den ideellen Hintergrund bildet die Pragmatische Philosophie von W. James bis R. Rorty, die Denkmodelle und Weltdeutungen im Kontext konkreter Lebensformen und Lebenswelten beschreibt. Grabner-Haider stellt die Lebenswelten und die sozialen Prozesse dieser Zeitepoche dar, Handel, Arbeit und Wirtschaft, die Beziehungen der Geschlechter. Neben den politischen Entwicklungen in Mitteleuropa, in England und Frankreich, in Nord-, Sud- und Osteuropa liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf den religiosen Weltdeutungen, dem Wirken der Bettelorden, der Herrschaft der Kleriker, den Lehren der Konzile und den religiosen Lebensformen. Im Kontrast dazu stehen die Lehren der Theologen und Philosophen an den Universitaten, die Konzepte der Humanisten und der Renaissance der antiken Lebenswelt. Grabner-Haider beschreibt die Konfliktfelder zwischen Juden, Christen und Moslems, die Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaft, der Medizin, der Mathematik und der Astronomie. Ein Blick fallt auf die Lebenswelt der Byzantinischen Kultur, die Expansion des Osmanischen Reiches, die griechisch-orthodoxe Religion in Suditalien und die Entwicklungen in Russland. Erinnert werden auch die dunklen Seiten der christlichen Reichsreligion, die Verfolgung der Ketzer und Haretiker, die Formen der Inquisition und der Kampf gegen die Kirchenreform. Johann Maier stellt die Kultur und Lebenswelt der Juden in Europa und in den islamischen Landern umfassend dar, die religiosen Lehren, die Formen des Kults und die theologischen Uberlegungen. Ebenso beleuchtet Karl Prenner die Kultur und Lebenswelt der Moslems im arabischen und im persischen Raum, den Austausch mit Juden und Christen in Spanien, die theologischen und philosophischen Lehren, die Schulen des Rechts, sowie die Formen der Herrschaft. Eine ubersichtliche Zeittabelle, eine Liste mit weiterfuhrender Literatur und ein Personenregister erschliessen den Band zusatzlich.
