This book examines figural vessels for anointing oil formed in the shape of animals and hybrid creatures, which were produced in Corinth from the middle of the 7th to the middle of the 6th century BC. Along with typology and stylistic development, the work focuses on the interpretation of the motifs. The animals and hybrids have symbolic characteristics, which on more detailed examination appear to be part of a complex system of symbols that can only be understood against the background of the values and social order during the Archaic period. This study presents a coherent new interpretation of the animals and hybrids, and makes a significant contribution to the understanding of symbolic imagery in archaic Greek society. German text.
Das Buch behandelt die figurlichen Salbolgefasse, die in Korinth von der Mitte des 7. bis ins mittlere 6. Jh. v. Chr. hergestellt wurden und in Form von Tieren und Mischwesen gestaltet sind. Neben Typologie und Stilentwicklung liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Deutung der Motive: Die Tiere und Mischwesen haben zeichenhaften Charakter und erweisen sich durch die eingehende Untersuchung als Teil eines komplexen Symbolsystems, das nur vor dem Hintergrund der archaischen Werte- und Gesellschaftsordnung zu verstehen ist. Der Studie liegt eine umfangreiche Materialsammlung zugrunde, die das uberraschend breite Spektrum des Motivschatzes der korinthischen Figurenvasen in Gestalt von Tieren und Mischwesen vor Augen fuhrt. Ausser der formgeschichtlichen und stilistischen Entwicklung wird auf der semantischen Ebene der ‘Mitteilungscharakter’ dieser figurlichen Salbolgefasse ‘dechiffriert’. Welche Bedeutung haben diese in Heiligtumern und Grabern gefundenen, einst mit Duftolen gefullten Gefasse als Gaben fur Gottheiten und Verstorbene? Den Zugang zum Verstandnis liefert der homerische Gleichnischarakter Mensch/Tier. Dieser ist von so grosser, zeichenhafter Bedeutung, dass die Tiere als Symbole sogar die Funktion von Stellvertretern ubernehmen und zu Reprasentanten von Alters- und Statusgruppen werden. Die Studie kommt nicht nur zu einer schlussigen neuen Interpretation der Tiere und Mischwesen unter den korinthischen Figurenvasen, sondern leistet daruber hinaus einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Verstandnis der symbolhaften Bildwelt der archaischen Gesellschaft Griechenlands.
