Intellektuelle gibt es in den Gesellschaften Europas seit dem Mittelalter und bis heute. Sie sind gelehrte Experten und zugleich kritische Begleiter des Zeitgeschehens, gehoren zur Wissenskultur der Universitaten und sind als kritische Kopfe eigenstandige, oft unangepasste Denker, die als Mahner und Kritiker haufig gefragt und zitiert wurden, aber stets auch auf Widerspruch trafen.
