Inscriptions de la Confédération Cirtéenne, de Cuicul et de la tribu des Suburbures

Cet ouvrage constitue le 3e volume du tome II des Inscriptions latines de l’Algerie (ILAlg), recueil dont l’origine remonte a la fin de la Premiere Guerre mondiale. Le premier tome, qui rassemble les textes epigraphiques de la province d’Afrique proconsulaire retrouves en Algerie, fut en effet publie en 1922 par Stephane Gsell, eminent specialiste de l’epigraphie et de l’histoire de l’Afrique du Nord antique. Sa disparition en 1932, puis le declenchement du second conflit mondial retarderent la preparation du tome suivant qui devait regrouper les documents epigraphiques provenant de la Confederation Cirteenne, le territoire de l’antique Cirta, aujourd’hui Constantine. Ce fut finalement le grand savant et epigraphiste francais H.-G. Pflaum qui assura la publication, en 1957 puis en 1976, des deux premiers volumes de ce tome II, editant ainsi plus de 7200 textes. La parution du troisieme, dont il avait acheve de rediger le manuscrit, fut malheureusement differee en raison de son deces survenu en 1979. Ce volume rassemble plus de 3000 documents, dont nombre d’inedits. Aux quelque 2500 inscriptions provenant de la partie occidentale de la Confederation Cirteenne, qu’il s’agisse de villages, de grosses agglomerations, ou encore de Mileu, une des trois colonies dependant de Cirta, s’ajoutent en effet plus de 600 textes epigraphiques de la colonie de Cuicul (Djemila), voisine de la Confederation, qui a notamment livre une tres riche serie d’inscriptions consacrees au grand dieu africain Saturne, ainsi que de nombreux documents d’histoire municipale. Enfin, pour la premiere fois dans les ILAlg, cet ouvrage comporte 104 planches photographiques, ou est reproduit l’ensemble des inscriptions qui interessent de nombreux domaines de l’histoire de l’Afrique du Nord et du monde romain.
