French description: Cet ouvrage collectif s’inscrit dans le contexte de la recente apparition, en Allemagne et en France notamment, de programmes de recherches en philosophie qui revendiquent explicitement une appartenance au domaine de la philosophie sociale . Il s’agit ici de preciser le ou les sens de cette appellation, et meme d’abord d’en verifier la simple pertinence. Quelle(s) definition(s) de la philosophie sociale est-il possible de donner, comment comprendre les rapports qu’entretient la philosophie sociale avec la philosophie politique? Le domaine de la philosophie sociale peut-il etre delimite par des principes, des methodes ou des objectifs communs? Autant d’interrogations qui n’ont aucune chance de trouver une reponse sans une enquete historique elaborant la question de savoir s’il est possible ou non de reconstituer une ou plusieurs traditions de philosophie sociale. Au total, il semble qu’on puisse considerer que la philosophie sociale designe un ensemble de positions theoriques au demeurant diverses et variees, dont le point commun est de se presenter comme des alternatives aussi bien a la philosophie politique liberale rawlsienne qu’a ses adversaires republicanistes ou communautariens : la philosophie sociale veut etre normative mais sans oublier d’etre descriptive, elle ne concoit pas les individus independamment de leurs rapports sociaux, et elle est critique a l’egard de rapports sociaux qui empechent l’epanouissement des individus.
