Al-Andarin, the site of ancient Androna, contains two circuit walls, ten churches, a public bath, and a large military building (a kastron) that covered 155 hectares and is, therefore, one of the largest archeological sites in the water-poor steppe regions of central Syria. It was the first of about 300 settlements in the region which were excavated between 1997 and 2007. The subsequent results of analysis concerning the surface findings, the kastron (built around 559 C.E.), and the ring walls not only help make the history of Androna in the 5th-7th century C.E. understandable, they also offer a living image of the connections between the country and the city in the period of Late Antiquity and early Byzantine Empire.
