The purpose of this dissertation is to study the topographical, functional and symbolical configuration of the monumental center of Constantinople by focusing on one of its most important “lost” monuments, the Basilica or Basileios Stoa (Royal Portico), the seat of the higher education, the Public Library, the Courts of justice and the Temple of Tyche. The term “monumental center” refers to the complex which surrounded the Sacred Palace on the east edge of the peninsula of Constantinople and included a group of grandiose buildings: the Hippodrome, the Baths of Zeuxippus, the Augustaion, the Senate House, the Basilica, the Milion, Hagia Eirene and Hagia Sophia.

This complex constituted the visual focus of the city and of the empire over time, as it accommodated the most important architectural monuments, functions, activities and events of public life. It also became one of the most important monumental ensembles of the ancient world; its greatness is still reflected in its material remains even to this day and is attested in the written sources of the Byzantine period.
