Das Herzogtum Schwaben entstand in den Jahren um 900, als das frankische Grossreich der Karolinger zerfiel, im Gebiet zwischen Alpen und Neckar, zwischen Lech und Oberrhein. Da das Furstentum in der Interessensphare der Konige von Italien, von Westfranken wie von Ostfranken und Burgund gelegen war, sah sich der Herzog von Schwaben schon bald genotigt, sich dem ostfrankischen Herrscher zu unterwerfen. Nur knapp zwei Jahrhunderte hatte das Furstentum als Teil des ostfrankisch-deutschen Reiches Bestand, bevor es in den Wirren des Investiturstreits zunachst der Spaltung anheimfiel und dann mit den Staufern im 13. Jahrhundert endgultig unterging. Trotzdem pragte dieses Furstentum, das neben dem heutigen Land Baden-Wurttemberg einen Teil der Schweiz und zeitweilig das Elsass umfasste, die Geschichte dieser Gebiete wesentlich mit. Der Autor berichtet anschaulich vom Ursprung der Alemannen und der Schwaben in der Antike, akzentuiert in seiner Darstellung die Herausbildung des Dukats wahrend des fruhen Mittelalters und schildert die Geschichte des Herzogtums uber den Untergang hinaus bis hin zu dessen “Nachleben”.
