La vie de Georges Scholarios a ete marquee par l’evenement majeur du XVe siecle, la chute de Constantinople le 29 mai 1453. Scholarios appartient a la generation des Byzantins qui ont connu a la fois les dernieres decennies de l’Empire romain d’Orient et les debuts de l’Empire ottoman. Son parcours personnel est fortement lie a ces bouleversements historiques, puisqu’il est devenu en 1454 le premier patriarche de Constantinople sous la domination turque: c’est en vertu de ce role eminent qu’il reste encore aujourd’hui un personnage important dans la memoire des orthodoxes. A la tete de l’Eglise de 1454 a 1456, Scholarios tente de rassembler les Grecs de l’Empire ottoman autour de leur identite religieuse commune, mais il est en butte a une opposition interieure telle qu’il doit ce retirer. Ces revers semblent lies a la personnalite ambigue de Scholarios: alors qu’il cherche a apparaitre comme un orthodoxe intransigeant, il ne peut faire oublier ses anciens liens avec le monde latin, ni son engagement dans les annees 1430 en faveur de la reunion des Eglises romaine et grecque. Au travers de ses ecrits autobiographiques et de sa correspondance, c’est un personnage complexe qui se revele, confronte pendant toute sa vie aux changements provoques par le delin, puis la disparition de l’Empire byzantin.
