Fritz Griebel. Leidenschaft fur Tapisserie/Passion for Tapestry
by Frederike Schmaschke
Openness to new things and the desire for life-long learning characterised the man and, above all, the artist Fritz Griebel (1899-1976). There is hardly a medium that he did not try out and master in the course of his six decades of work, including room-sized tapestries. This catalogue raisonne makes the almost forty tapestries and other textile works that were produced according to his designs at the Nuremberg Gobelin Manufactory (NGM) accessible to the public. Since the closure of the manufactory at the turn of 2002/2003, knowledge of its history, working methods and influence has faded. Fritz Griebel, however, always held the manufactory and its works in high esteem. Thus, in 1949, as director of the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts, he wrote to the city treasurer Dr. Georg Zitzmann: Today, when quality work, craftsmanship and intellectuality are our rescue [sic!], such a business must not perish. This publication presents some of the most beautiful products of the NGM.
