Christian Daniel Rauch und Karl Friedrich Schinkel sind als Bildhauer, Architekt und Gestalter weltbekannt. Weniger bekannt ist jedoch die enge und freundschaftliche Zusammenarbeit dieser beiden Genies, der kreative Dialog von Werkstatt zu Werkstatt. Zahlreiche zwischen ihnen gewechselte Briefe fanden sich nun in Berlin und Krakau. In dieser Korrespondenz, die den Staub der Ateliers ebenso atmet wie den Esprit der Goethezeit, wird der Geist des humanistisch gepragten Klassizismus lebendig. Die Betrachtung der Kunst erfolgt dabei weniger aus der Gipfelhohe von Theorien als aus der alltaglichen Sicht auf die Praxis in den Ateliers. Die insgesamt 55 Briefe lassen den Leser in eine Welt eintauchen, die durch ihre Schopfungen in Berlin und Brandenburg und weit daruber hinaus ebenso unverganglich ist wie die lebenslange Freundschaft von Rauch und Schinkel. Als Kunstler war Rauch ein Solitar und jedem ‘gemeinschaftlichen Entwurf” abhold, allerdings ‘ausgenommen mit Schinkel”, wie er im Tagebuch notierte, da ‘dessen Biegsamkeit gleich von der Stelle hilft, und nie langwierige Diskussionen veranlasst”.
