Im Zuge der Stadterweiterung ab 1860 hat sich Basel innert rund 100 Jahren uber das gesamte Gemeindegebiet ausgedehnt und befindet sich weiterhin in stetiger Transformation. Die offentlichen Aufenthaltsraume fur Freizeit und Erholung sind in ihrem hergebrachten Bestand jedoch unvermehrbar; entsprechend ist die Stadtentwicklung zunehmend auf Ausgleich und Stadtreparatur bedacht. Auf der Grundlage einer Auswahl von historischen Fotografien untersucht dieser Band die Erscheinungsformen und die gesellschaftliche Wahrnehmung des stadtischen Freiraums von der Grunderzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Die Lehrmeinungen und politischen Prozesse der Vergangenheit sind wegweisend fur die stadtebaulichen Aufgaben im 21. Jahrhundert: Schaffung neuer Freiraume, Erhalt der Biodiversitat und Stadtumbau infolge der Klimaerwarmung.
