English summary: The two theories of freedom by Hobbes and Kant appear to stand in insolvable contradiction to each other. According to Hobbes freedom is situated in desire; according to Kant it is situated in reason. This controversy in enlightenment philosophy about freedom has continued until today to cause considerable irritations in ethics, philosophy of law and jurisprudence. Jan Schapp solves the contradiction by reflecting on Christian teachings on freedom as they have been developed in the controversies between Pelagius and Augustine and between Erasmus and Luther. He not only places the enlightenment in its theological context, but also argues on the basis of a Platonic model of ethics, the basic outlines of which are still recognisable in theology and the enlightenment.
