Unter den zahlreichen Werken des italienischen Humanisten Eneas Silvius Piccolomini (als Papst 1458-1464 Pius II.) gehort der hier erstmals in einer vollstandigen kritischen Edition zusammen mit einer deutschen Ubersetzung vorliegende Pentalogus zu den weniger bekannten Texten. Neben Friedrich III. und Eneas selbst nehmen an dem “Funfergesprach” der Kanzler Kaspar Schlick sowie die Bischofe Nicodemo della Scala von Freising und Silvester Pflieger von Chiemsee teil. Die Hauptthemen bilden Missstande und Fehlentwicklungen in Kirche und Reich, die sich den Zeitgenossen allerorten darboten, wobei Eneas sich nicht allein auf eine Darstellung der verfahrenen Situation beschrankt, sondern Mittel und Wege aufzeigen will, durch die der romisch-deutsche Konig zu einer Losung der Probleme beitragen konne. Wahrscheinlich nur wenige Wochen nach Piccolominis Eintritt in den Dienst des Habsburgers entstanden, versucht der Pentalogus einerseits die humanistischen Bildungsideale in eine pragmatische Anleitung zur politischen Kommunikation einzubauen. Andererseits bietet das darin enthaltene reichspolitische Programm, das die Wiedergewinnung Italiens durch den romisch-deutschen Konig und dessen Weg zur Kaiserkronung vorzeichnet, ein Gegenmodell zu den furstlichen und kurfurstlichen Reformplanen der Zeit.
