Durers Kupferstich in seiner ganzen “Ratselhaftigkeit” ist immer noch aktuell, aber die Fachwelt beginnt allmahlich zu resignieren oder misstraut einem Neuansatz, der den Horizont von Ikonographie, Ikonologie und Ideengeschichte uberschreitet. Unbeirrt halt man an dem Minimalkonsens fest, “dass der Titulus MELENCOLIA auf das sitzende weibliche Flugelwesen bezogen werden muss.” Ganz so, als ware eine Alternative nach gesundem Menschenverstand uberhaupt nicht denkbar. Doch nach all den vergeblichen Versuchen, das Ratsel zu losen, sollte man eine kopernikanische Wende wenigstens einmal probeweise andenken, indem man die Inschrift an der Peripherie lasst, wo sie im Bild auch steht. Denn solange das Fabelwesen suggeriert, das Thema des Kupferstichs B 74 sei die “Melancholie”, dreht man sich im Kreis und kommt uber ikonographische Zuschreibungen nicht zu einem schlussigen Bildkonzept.
