English summary: During the last few years, our approach to the Middle Ages has changed altogether. Thus the European Middle Ages are rather regarded as a self-contained era instead of simply as a prelude to Modernity. In a way, this can be referred to as an anthropological turn in Medieval Studies with a major impact on Constitutional History. Current research increasingly focuses on personal relations. However, it is controversial as to what extent contemporaries already distinguished between the king’s public function as a permanent representative of a community and his condition or quality of being human and thus mortal. This volume focuses on different dimensions of royal succession – such as the queen’s role, the function of the ruler’s sacred status and the phenomenon of disputed royal successions – as crucial aspects to the constitution of me. German description: In den letzten Jahren hat sich auch der Blick auf das Mittelalter insgesamt gewandelt. Das europaische Mittelalter wird nicht mehr einfach nur als Vorgeschichte der Moderne begriffen, sondern als ganz eigenstandige Epoche. In diesem Sinne kann man von einer anthropologischen Wende der Mediavistik sprechen, die sich auch nachhaltig auf die Themen der Verfassungsgeschichte ausgewirkt hat. Die Forschung konzentriert sich auf die personalen Beziehungen zwischen den verschiedenen Herrschaftstragern, doch bleibt die Frage umstritten, bis zu welchem Grad man in dieser Zeit bereits zwischen der offentlichen Funktion des Konigs als uberzeitlichem Reprasentanten des Gemeinwesens und seiner Eigenschaft als sterblicher Mensch zu unterscheiden wusste. Ein fur die Verfassung mittelalterlicher Reiche zentraler Aspekt ist die Thronfolge, deren Dimensionen im vorliegenden Band vergleichend untersucht werden: die Rolle der Konigin, die Funktion der Herrschersakralitat oder das Phanomen strittiger Thronfolgen.
