Dieses Buch behandelt ein zentrales Konzept in der mesopotamischen Weltanschauung: den Namen als Grundbestandteil des Menschen, im Leben und nach dem Tod. Im Gegensatz zum organischen Korper ist der Name nicht den Regeln der Sterblichkeit unterworfen und bindet das Individuum auch nach dem Tode ans Diesseits. Um aber diese Form des Weiterlebens zu gewahrleisten, muss der Name so gut wie moglich – mundlich wie auch schriftlich (“geschriebener Name” = Inschrift) – verankert werden; der Bewahrung des Namens kommt deshalb uber die Rolle als Gliederungselement von Erinnerung hinaus die Funktion zu, seinen Trager am Leben zu erhalten.Damit versteht sich die Arbeit als ein Beitrag zum Umgang mit dem Tod, fur Mesopotamien ein kaum erforschtes Gebiet. Die diachrone Behandlung des Themas anhand von Keilschrifttexten aus dem 3. bis 1. vorchristlichen Jahrtausend zeigt, dass der Name als Mittel zum Selbsterhalt eine Konstante der altorientalischen Geisteswelt ist. Es gibt allerdings Entwicklungen, die sich am besten fur den “geschriebenen Namen” fassen lassen, fur dessen Konzeption einschneidende Veranderungen festzustellen sind: Der sich wandelnde Umgang mit dem Namen spiegelt den Wandel im Umgang mit Gegenwart, Vergangenheit und Zukunft in Mesopotamien wider.
